Valentine Heart Crayons

Valentine's Day is coming up and with that I'm sure most of your little ones will be exchanging Valentines with friends. These heart crayons are starting to become a tradition in our house. A few years ago a friend shared this idea with me and we have made them every year since. Ridiculously easy, and your little ones can help.

You will need:
Crayons- We keep a container in our craft closet that we add broken ones to all year long.
Heart shaped candy/cupcake pan. I'm using this one Wilton 12-Cavity Petite Heart Pan .

The first thing you need to do is peel your crayons. This can be time consuming and after three years I have finally discovered the secret to doing this easily. Put them in a bowl of warm water and the kids can peel them easy peasy!

Break your crayons and put them in the pan! Make sure you look your pan over for bits of paper- maybe you can find the one I missed?

Put them in a preheated 250 degree oven for 5-10 mins until melted.
Cool for about 20 mins. Or, if you live where it is unimaginably cold like I do, put them on your back deck for 5 mins and they will be frozen solid!

Tap the pan gently and out they come!

We are going to pair our crayons with little coloring books we made in Photoshop. Now to convince my 5yr old that these are much cooler than the Hannah Montana Valentine's she saw at the store....

  1. Do you have to spray the pan with anything? Do you think it would work with an Ikea ice cube tray?

  3. No, you don't have to spray the pan at all! I have the Ikea ice cube trays too but I don't think those can go in the oven. I have made them in the past with plastic treat containers. Doing that you have to melt the wax first and then pour in. Stay tuned next week- I have another project we are going to use the ice cube trays for.

    Sure Dorothy!

  4. Another great craft idea! I'm literally going to put the kids in the car right now to head up to JA's for a Wilton heart pan. Thanks again!

  5. So cute! I bought a Sesame Street silicone ice cube tray in hopes of doing this last summer but it was too late by the time I found the right tray, so we'll do it this year!

  7. How many crayons would you say it took?

  8. Can you still color with them after this process

  9. I made these tonight in an Ikea ice tray. It's not meant to go in the oven but it did ok at 200 degrees. The only thing I'm worried about is that all the oil in the crayons rose to the top of the mold. They still look great but they are a bit messier to color with because the color gets on your skin a bit. Has this happened to others?

  10. I have found that the cheaper crayons don't work as well as good ole Crayolas for this, Anon.

  11. Does anyone have a link to a great coloring page I can include with these?

  12. I first melted my crayons in foil lined muffin tins, then scooped out into ice cube trays. Worked great!
