Flower Hair Barrettes

My girlies were gifted some hair clips like these from their aunt in the big city. You know what I was thinking......oooh fun, cute, easy project! These are the ones we made this afternoon gearing up for St. Patrick's Day. Wouldn't they be cute though in rainbow colors, or simple white with yellow centers to look like daisies?

What you will need:
- Ribbon (I used 1/4 inch)
- Glue gun/glue
- Buttons, or somthing else for the centers
- Hair clips of your choice (we used french barrettes)

First you need to cut your ribbon. You will need 4 pieces. Cut them whatever lengths you want, longer will give you a larger flower, shorter a smaller one. Just make sure they are all the same length. I cut mine approximately 3 inches or so.

Now, put a dab of hot glue in the center of your ribbon and fold the end in to stick in the middle.

Now, fold the other end in.

Do this with your other three pieces.

Take one of your pieces and put a dab of hot glue in the center. Take another piece and glue them together forming an "X".

Put a dab of hot glue in the center again and add another one of your pieces.

And the fourth piece....starting to look like a flower!

Go ahead and hot glue on your center. I think a button is cute, but I have a thing for buttons. You could also use a rhinestone, or even felt.

Now we need to line our clip. Take the prong piece out of your clip. If glue gets on the ends it can make it hard to close.

Cut a length of ribbon and start by gluing the end to the underside of the clip as shown.

Put a few dabs of glue on the top of the barrette and fold your ribbon over and press down.

Now trim your ribbon down leaving only enough to fold over to the underside of the clip covering the end.

Hot glue the end over and your clip is lined. Put the prong back in.

Put a dab of glue on the center of your barrette and attach your flower. Easy peasy barrette perfect for St. Patty's Day, or any day!

  1. This is so funny to me...I just made these exact same barrettes (different colors) 2 weeks ago. I was trying to find a different hair clip style to do instead of korkers. Very cute and can't wait to start reading your blog regularly!

  8. Hi,
I love these and tried to make them last night. I used a hot glue gun but this morning I was able to easily peel it off the metal barrette. Any tips?
