Edited to add: This has been a successful tutorial for some, but many have had issues with it as well. I had wanted to at some point rewrite the instructions to make it more user friendly, as well as I had some ideas to make this pattern easier. Up to now I've lacked the time or motivation. Please keep this in mind if choosing to go ahead with this tutorial. I strive to make all of my tutorials easy- but missed the mark on this one. So please read through before deciding to go ahead as I don't want this to be a frustrating experience for anyone and some had difficulty making sense of this one. :)
I've named this bag The Scrappy Clutch, because it was made out of my scrap bin. The scrap bin... a tote full of fabric scraps that aren't big enough to make anything with, yet I think one day I might find a purpose for them. So, this project was especially satisfying, because for once I found a purpose for a few!
Until a week or so ago I had no idea I even needed a scrappy clutch. It wasn't until I was peaking at the blogs of my followers (I love you guys- thank you for making me feel like someone is listening) and came across Zura's wonderful blog that I knew I needed one. When you have a minute check out her blog Sew Retro Chic. She has some great tutorials and also has a blog store where she sells adorable clutches that she makes. I asked her if she minded me using the photos of her clutches for inspiration, letting her know I would probably make a tutorial and she said she didn't mind. This is what I came up with. Not the same, but was born from what I saw on her blog. Read on if you'd like to make one too. It is the perfect size for running out to the store. It will hold your cards, keys and a few other things. I think it would also be realy cute as a small make up bag.
What you'll need:
- Fabric scraps
- Fusible fleece
- Scissors and/or rotary cutter
- 7 inch zipper
- A glass
- Measuring tape and/or ruler (not shown)
As usual use a 1/4 inch seam allowance unless otherwise stated.
I used a bunch of different fabrics as I was digging through my scraps and didn't have enough of any one thing. You can use all one fabric or mix and match.
Fusible Fleece
- 2 pieces 5 1/4 inches X 10 inches
- 2 pieces 3 1/2 inches X 7 1/2 inches
Main Fabric for Outer Purse
- 2 pieces 5 1/4 inches X 10 inches
Contrasting Band, Top of Purse/ Strap
- 2 pieces 3 1/2 X 7 1/2 inches
- 1 piece 11 1/2 inches X 2.5 inches
Lining Fabric
- 2 pieces 5 1/4 inches X 10 inches
- 2 pieces 3 1/2 inches X 7 1/2 inches
Fuse your fusible fleece to the wrong side of your two main outer fabric and contrasting top fabric pieces. All of the pieces that make up the outer of your purse.
Take all four of your 3 1/2 X 7 1/2 inch pieces and press on long edge down 1/2 inch. Set aside.
Using your glass you are going to create the rounded corners of your clutch. Take one of your outer clutch pieces and using your glass draw a curve on one of the bottom corners of your fabric.
Fold your piece in half and cut the corner so that you have created a curve on both bottom corners.
Using the fabric piece you just cut as a pattern piece, curve your other three pieces (one other outer piece and 2 lining pieces). Set aside.
When I sew something with a strap I like to sew it first. Folding your strap piece right sides together lengthwise, sew together down the long edge.
Turn right side out, press, and then topstitch down both long edges approx 1/8 inch in from the edge.
This part can be a little tricky. Just be patient, you'll get it. Taking one of your top contrasting pieces and one of the lining pieces of the same size pin down the length of your zipper (your zipper should be 1/4 inch in from either side). Remember you have pressed the edge of your contrasting piece and lining piece down by 1/2 inch, this pressed down edge will be the edge butted up against the side of your zipper.
This is the back side. This is why you need to pin, your zipper is sandwiched in the middle of both fabrics.
Now, flip back over. Using your zipper foot sew this together.
Now do this on the other side of your zipper as well with your other two fabric pieces. This is what you will have when you are done.
Now fold your fabric so that both like fabrics are right sides together like the photo shows. Your zip is in the middle.
Sew down your short ends on both sides. Not shown, but grab your strap and fold in half. One one side sandwich it between your main fabric pieces close to the zip.
Turn right side out and this is what you have.
Press both your outer fabric and your lining fabric in by 1 inch.Set aside.
Take your two main pieces and sew them together right sides together leaving the top open. Then do this with your lining pieces. Clip curves (put little cuts where the fabric curves being careful not to cut through your stitching). This helps your bag keep it's nice curve shape when turned right side out. You can see these cuts on the outer pieces, top of photo.
Now turn your lining fabric right side out and put your main fabric inside it. I uploaded the wrong photo here- you want to do the opposite of this. My main fabric should be the lining fabric and the lining fabric should be the main fabric in this photo. have I confused you? If so you will see what I'm talking about in the next photo.
See? Lining fabric is really on the outside! Now sew two rows of gathering stitches around the top aprox 1/8 and 1/2 inches in. If you aren't sure how to gather see my Ruffle Jeans Tutorial.
Pull on your threads to gather. Be gentle, you are going through the fleece plus two fabrics it won't be easy to pull the threads. You don't want to break them!
Grab your contrasting band piece with the zipper. Unfold where you have pressed it so it looks like a tube again. Remember how it looked in this step?
Put the tube inside your main fabric pieces that you have just gathered. The lining side should still be facing out. Adjust your gathers to fit the size of your band piece and pin. I should have pinned but I'm cutting corners.
Sew around the top edge 1 inch in. Normally when gathering you would sew around the raw edge 1/4 inch. I decided at this point I wanted to make my clutch smaller so decided to sew in an inch. If you would like a deeper bag, sew the 1/4 inch and you will have a fatter contrasting band and larger bag.
From the inside of the bag pull up the sontrasting band and fold over your top lining piece. The raw edge of your lining piece is pressed under. Now that you have this turn your clutch right side out.
Topstitch 1/8 inch in on your contrasting band all the way around, making sure to catch your lining in the seam.
Clutch? Make up case? Whatever it is you have a cute little bag!

Yeay! You did it! Oh Christine, it's beautiful! I love that it's softly gathered instead of pleated. How I wish I could just wing it in sewing instead of buying patterns after patterns. You're very talented, I'm always checking my reader for your new posts :)
ReplyDeleteYour tutorials are great, I wish I had more time to try each of them, because everytime I see a new one I want to make that item that day but dont have the time that day and next thing I know you have a new awesome one up!!! :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I absolutely love the design and perfect fabric choices!
ReplyDeleteSO Cute! I just found you and I think I'm going to have to add you to my "busting at the seams" google reader! And, make this bag, of course!
ReplyDeleteGreat clutch. I really like the colours, cute!
ReplyDeleteThis is a nice clutch..thanks for the tutorial. Can I suggest that you make a gadget so that it shows "labels" on your sidebar. It would make it easier to find things.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Khris
Very nice, just wandering how can you do this when you have 3 children around. I have 2 kids and no time.
ReplyDeletethis is so cute! i can't wait to try it!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this! I've been wanting a smallish cluch that looked just like this! Thank you for such a great tut. Going to make this tonight!
ReplyDeleteany possible way you are selling this one???!!! i absolutely LOVE it!

I made this for me, but my 5yr old claimed it. She said "But mama I've always wanted a grown up mom purse", so to her it went. My kids have a thing for purses!
ReplyDeleteWhat fabric did you use?
ReplyDeleteIt is "Flourish" by Studio E. I rarely buy the same fabrics a second time but I really need to get more of this. I can't seem to find the floral print anywhere though! If you happen to see it I would be so happy if you let me know where! :)
ReplyDeleteI did find some on their website. It says priced in 12 yard bolts though...not sure what that means? (This is the same person as "Nate", I was just signed in under my husbands account yesterday!)
ReplyDeletewow...nice tutorial...i have to try this
ReplyDeletethanks for a great tutorial! I made one and posted photos on my blog today.
ReplyDeleteThis is an AWESOME tutorial! I may have to make one! Love your fabric too! : )
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous...I can't wait to try one! I just made my first bag the other day and can't wait to try yours :)

I found your blog through homemadebyjill. what a cute bag... I am going to attempt this today! thank you for the tutorial!
ReplyDeletesuch a cute bag! I have been trying to make it today and am stuck at the step where you put the zipper/contrasting part into the main fabric pieces that have just been gathered. I don't understand how to put the zipper piece in - what should it look like when I look inside? Should I see the lining piece of the zipper part? I sewed that but it didn't seem right, so I took it out. Any help you can give is much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteUnfold the zipper piece so that it looks like a tube like it looked in a previous step. Your bag piece, make sure the lining is facing OUT. Put the zipper piece inside with the right side of the facing piece facing the right side of the bag piece.
ReplyDeleteDoes that make sense, or was that even more confusing? :) I will check back tomorrow and try to explain better!
yep, that helps - thanks so much - great project!
ReplyDeleteGreat!
ReplyDeleteI did not follow the directions the first time I made the bag with that part. I left the zipper piece how it was and sewed the lining and outside piece into the bottom of the bag. When I flipped the bag the right way, I did not have to flip the flap down. However, I do like the results! You can see what it looks like on my blog!
ReplyDeleteChristine, Your little scrappy bag is adorable! And I think your tutorial is a masterpiece. So well done!!! Kudos to you for making it is easy to understand. I sew, but nothing too advanced, and I'll be making this. I have lots of scraps and I'm going to go through my scrap basket too!
ReplyDeleteWonderful and creative post. I'm following you- I think I'll get many great ideas!
Yvonne
Hi and thanks for sharing your little bag. I'm a sewer and this will be a fun project. It really looks nice in the fabrics you have choosen.
ReplyDeleteJust love this clutch!! I would like to make it as a clutch, but am also trying to figure out if I could enlarge it to make it into a purse. Could you tell me what the finished size is of this clutch? Thanks!
ReplyDeletethanks for share the tutorial... i wanna make ones... love ur blog...
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the tute! This was the first zipper I've ever sewn. And your directions were really easy to follow. Well, I lost you at attaching the contrasting band to the main piece, but I managed! Mines a little (a lot) wonky, but I'm still so proud! Thanks for inspiring us!
ReplyDeleteLove the clutch. I have added this to my Christmas gift ideas list since I am wanting to make as many gifts as possible this year.
ReplyDeleteBTW, love the name of the blog, northern Canada, eh? I'm central Ontario here. :)
I have no idea how I got here, but glad I stopped by.

I bet I've checked this post 15 times since I first found it. I'm making the clutch in pieces, which requires me to revisit your site multiple times. I love this project and I cannot wait to finish. Thanks so much for sharing your work with us!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute. I'm kind of just wishing we were friends & you'd just make one for me. I had to chuckle about the glass being in the first picture. I just started sewing, and in my mind, it was surely signifying the stiff drink I'd need if I attempted anything like this.
ReplyDeleteDarling blog you have.
I made one, not as fabulous as yours... practice is what I need...

Love this clutch! Do you mind if I post a photo of it on my blog? I would very much like to share this post with my blogging friends!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
No problem Sarah! :)
ReplyDeleteHey Christine!
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome clutch and I'm in the middle of making it but I'm a bit stumped....You have the main fabric 5 1/2 but the lining 5 1/4 is that correct because when I put the main fabric in the lining fabric it's to big. And one more question...I'm to the ruffle part and it looks like in your pick you just sewed the lining part to ruffle is that correct or did you sew the lining and main together to ruffle? I'm still a very beginner sewer so I'm having a bit of trouble with that step. But I've done good until now so I'm proud.... Sorry for the long question. Can't wait to give it to my mom for mom day!
Very interesting! No, you are totally 100% correct, they should be the same size. I must have made a typo when I typed this out and I can't believe how many photos I have received in my inbox and nobody has pointed this out to me! :) Cute that 1/4 inch off the top! You could actually cut off another inch along the top. See in the step where I sew the gathered part of the clutch to the upper part? I used a 1 inch seam allowance because I decided at that point it would look cute smaller. You can leave as is though too!
ReplyDeleteNo, the lining and outer fabric are ruffled together. If you have trouble gathering that many layers try a zig zag stitch over dental floss instead of the two lines of gathering stitches.
I hope I helped!! :)
Changed the typo!
ReplyDeletethanks for the reply! I'll let you know how it turns out once I finish!
ReplyDeleteVery cute bag! It would make a great make-up bag as a girlfriend gift too! :)

me again....
ReplyDeleteIs there a secret to sewing the zipper part in?? I can't get it to fit under the needle and foot to go all the way around it..... I have the main fabric part inside and the lining fabric on the outside which I think is right but for the life of me I can't figure out how to sew the darn thing!! Any suggestions would be appreciated!:)
For the zipper, it will help to use a zipper foot as it is a ton narrower than a reg foot. Also when you get to the zipper pull, to go around it, sew up to it and then lift your presser foot move the zipper pull and move on. You won't be able to sew around it or your stitches will definitely be wonky!
ReplyDeletehmm....I had to get away from it for a couple days but thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if we're talking about the same part or not.... I'm trying to sew the two pieces together the main piece to the zipper piece and I just can't get it to fit under the foot and needle??... Any suggestions for that...I did try the zipper foot and it's still not working....
ReplyDeletesorry for all the questions but I appreciate you trying to walk me through it!
You should have a lever on the back of your pressure foot which enables you to lift it up more to slide something under.
ReplyDeleteI love this clutch-haven't made it yet, but it's on my TO DO list. Posted link and photo on my blog at http://www.ellzabelle.com/2010/05/scrappy-clutch-from-from-igloo.html. Thanks! Ellen
ReplyDeleteI made mine today! Thanx so much for posting this :)

Love the clutch :)
ReplyDeleteI just made this bag with my sister. This was the first time either of us had ever put in a zipper! We love it. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI made another one for my mother, couldnt post it earlier as she might have seen it before her bday: http://mybusycraftlife.blogspot.com/2010/06/happy-birthday-mom.html
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you've posted this as a free tutorial, but you've lost me at attaching the zipper portion to the bag. I read your comments to other people who had the same problem, but I'm still lost. Any chance you could update this tutorial with more clear instructions at that part?
ReplyDeleteHi cmpelti! Life is busy but I will try to get to this at some point soon! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is such an adorable project! I used some scrapbooking fabric papers to make one and it came out cute! http://audreysreflection.blogspot.com/2010/07/why-i-havent-been-scrapping.html
ReplyDeleteI LOVE YOUR BLOG! :)
OK since I found your blog I have been making project after project!! But I started with this clutch and actually used some scrapbboking fabric paper which worked great!
ReplyDeletehttp://audreysreflection.blogspot.com/2010/07/why-i-havent-been-scrapping.html
I made two of these bags this weekend and I am on the third one right now. The tutorial is really easy to follow. However do you have a trick with the zipper once you sew the two sides together and turn it right side out? My corners on the top of the bag where the zipper is just don't look as good as yours. Any tips?
ReplyDeleteI love this clutch and have made one also. I have just started my own blog and wanted to link this ( if thats ok) but not sure how to?? Help please ...?
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome to link to it!
ReplyDeleteJust copy and paste this into your post and it will be a link to this one.

hi..wow..easy to understand.. cannot wait to do this as my new upcoming weekend project... luv your blog..luvly for newbie like me.. :)
ReplyDeletehey!! i am a bit confused on one part of the directions. when you say "Put the tube inside your main fabric pieces that you have just gathered. The lining side should still be facing out." do i have the tube inside out still as well? and the other question is, do i put the tube in the clutch liner first or top of clutch? just trying to figure out which part i am sewing to the clutch. maybe my questions are confusing to you...i hope not!
ReplyDeleteoh! i figured it out and i LOVE it! sooooo cute! will share link when post picture. thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I found this looking for a clutch for the Sew Mama Sew bag swap - linked to you on my blog - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt seems I am not the only one who had issues with attaching the top part to the bag body. When I did it, and I studied it and worked my brain over too hard and just went with it...When I turned my bag right side out, the raw edges showed on the inside of the bag. This tutorial was okay compared to other ones I have followed but the confusing parts really bothered me. I'm sure there is an easier way to do this style of bag. What was the point of pressing the 1/2 on the top of the bag and then unfolding it later? I hope you can update this tutorial and help with those confusing issues, this is a super cute bag I would love to learn to do.
ReplyDeleteThe clutches I have seen made successfully are amazing, and to those having issues, YES there is most certainly an easier and more seamless way to do this. Hopefully in the near future I will have the time to revamp this for you guys! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm certainly not perfect and don't always get things 100% on my first try but love to share the things I make with all of you and try to help you make them too.
These are free tutorials and thus may not be perfect but hope they help you along the way.
this is awesome! thanks for sharing;0)

ReplyDeleteThank you!!!
Thank you! Here are my first Scrappy Clutches. Greetings from Russia! http://chikosa.blogspot.com/2011/04/blog-post.html
ReplyDeleteWhat does the bag look like on the inside? I'm missing a step somewhere. When I sewed my top to the bottom when you open it you see the rough edge of sewing the two pieces together. Does that make sense? The bag is so cute on the outside that I would expect the inside to be cute and clean as well. Please help!
ReplyDeleteOh, my! That's EXCACTLY what I thought, Jenkjack! I've been reading all the comments to see if I was doing something wrong and figure it out, but after all the comments, I'm right with you. Are the raw edges supposed to look from the inside? After all that work... *sigh*
ReplyDeleteAnd the clutch looks SO cute from the outside! I love it! Well, thanks for the tutorial, anyway, Christine! :)
I'm sorry, I agree the instructions could be better! This was one of my first tutes!
ReplyDeleteNO! You should not see seams or raw edges from the inside. See the second to last picture in the tute? Where I show the clutch inside out and see how the top band part covers the seam?
Well, when you turn it right side out and topstitch, you should catch that band part and thus cover up the seam. Go slowly!
Does that make any sense? One day when I have the time I will try to revise this tute and make it easier to understand. There were a few things I would have done differently for sure that would result in this being easier to make and make more sense!
I just made one of these and was able to follow the directions just fine :)
ReplyDeleteThanks heaps!
Hello!
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I were planning on making your cute scrappy clutch and I was wanting to ask you a few questions about them before we start.
Do you think it is nessesary to use the fleece? We don't have any and I'm wondering if I could go without it or if I need to use it.
Anothers thing is do you know how big the finished product is?
Thanks so much! If you could get back with me ASAP then that would be great! You can contact me at my ministry blogs contact page: www.royal-daughters-of-the-king.blogspot.com
Blessings,
Bethany
Putting this on my to-do list. Also, shared it on my blog, SEW that! www.sewthat.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteJust made one, it's so adorable and I put it on my blog along with a link to your blog here.
ReplyDeleteSee it here: http://mulleskreativeverden.blogspot.com/2011/10/scrap-clutch.html
heey, thank you for this tutorial. I try to make something like this. Great Blog! Great ideas!

Hi. I've been sitting at my sewing machine since 11 o'clock this morning. It's 6:59 p.m. and I still don't have a clutch. I just ended up throwing the whole thing away. I wasted the fabric, the zipper and a whole day, and I never could make heads or tails of the instructions that seems to be stumping everyone else. When I did put it together, all the raw edges were showing on the inside.
ReplyDeleteIt's a cute blog, a cute bag, but the instructions left a lot to be desired.
I recognize that it's a free tutorial, and I know the time, dedication and selflessness it takes to put something like this together. I appreciate your efforts immensely. I'm just sorry I have nothing to show for it.
Hi!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry anonymous if it was a frustrating experience for you. I certainly don't want that to be the case for anyone. I have added a disclaimer to the top of this tutorial. As of yet I have not had the time or motivation to re write this. As you can see I have not even posted on the blog in 6 mos. :) Merry Christmas!!
I like your tutorial. You did a fine job in spite of a few glitches. Patience is everything when sewing. Thank you. Anonymous...we have all had these times with our sewing, even with the best of instructions written by 'pros', even when using expensive fabrics. Sewers just have to keep on keepin on. One day you will look back and it will all fall into place. Trust me.
ReplyDeleteOh how cute! I love the colors!! I've been wanting to make another purse (even though I already have a huge collection!), and LOVE yours!!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I love this clutch and I started to make it. I'm at the point where you start sewing and doing the gathering. How do you sew the lining and the main fabric together? I try to put it around my sewing machine but it doesn't reach my needle to well. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this tutorial!! This clutch is so flipping cute!! I just finished my first one today. check it out at my blog
ReplyDeletehttp://shanni77.blogspot.com/2012/03/cutesy-little-clutch.html
Awesome tutorial! Thanks for sharing - Mine turned out great. I had struggled with the top band part at the end, but figured out after a few trys - I had it flipped the wrong way.
ReplyDeleteWahoo! I just finished my bag and I love it. :) I had some trouble with a couple of steps, but overall it was a very easy tutorial to understand. The only problems I had, I was able to fix/understand by reading thru the comments.
ReplyDeleteI love it, and didn't have problems with the tutorial...but will make the strap longer on the next one :)
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm a new reader and I find your project really beautiful and well explained! Your tutorial has reached Italy!
ReplyDeleteI'll try to do it for my sewing kit!
