I gave up this morning and just took photos in the semi dark! :)
In a nutshell, this is a great pattern! Easy to read, easy to sew. Perfect for beginners and those more advanced. This backpack does have a zipper but really there is no reason to fear. The construction is simple, promise.
Would I ever steer you wrong?
Lori recommends using prequilted fabric, but I didn't have any on hand and haven't let myself buy fabric in quite a while. Plus, I wanted to use this super cute fabric. It has been waiting for the right project.
I used fusible fleece along with this fabric and lined the inside of the backpack. Really easy modifications to do and as you can see the fusible fleece provided enough structure to the backpack. As you are seeing it here, there is nothing in it and it is standing up on it's own.
The pattern calls for a long 26 inch zipper. I couldn't find one that length in town and the one fabric store we have here also did not have zipper tape. I improvised using a much shorter 22 inch zip and as you can see, that size zip was plenty long enough. So, don't worry if you need to modify the zipper also. 22 inches is plenty long enough to have the backpack open really wide.
I also wasn't able to find backpack adjusters in town (no surprise). If you have this problem, you could easily use D rings. They would do the job just fine and are what I was going to use. Problem was I came home from the store and realized I had bought one 2 pack of D rings instead of two. As luck would have it I found a broken backpack in the closet with backpack adjusters that *just* fit and were the perfect colour!
I blame it on Little Dude who had been hiding behind the thread stand while I was looking for them and came out smelling funny. I wanted to leave quickly.
Can I interrupt this post for a moment?
Little Dude turns three this week and potty training is not going so well. I've managed to successfully potty train two children. One before she was two, and one slightly after.
Why is this little boy going on three?
I have tried:
- Encouragement
- Enthusiastic potty dances
- Candy
- Stickers
- Promise of toys
- Pint sized guilt trips (for the record guilt trips don't work on a toddler)
- Showing him my frustration
Ok, back to the doll carrier...
This was a really great pattern and took a couple of hours at most to put together including cutting time. Minimal pattern pieces (there is really only one you need to print out) and very versatile. With the pattern Lori includes a smaller version for toddlers as well as a modification you can make to the front to change the doll carrier portion to a zippered pocket.
I know I will be making more of these in the future for gifts and another for my little guy. Boys want to carry their stuffies too!
Sorry, no modeling shots, I was sneaking from my girly this morning and she was carrying around her dolly that would have fit the best!
Don't forget, Lori is offering a discount on her doll carrier pattern to From An Igloo Readers. enter igloopattern until December 25th at checkout and receive $2 off the price of the pattern!
And in other news...
Matching nighties complete.
I promise I have some things non dolly related on the horizon! :)

I've been teaching young children for 17 years--think about how many diapers that is!!! Are your two others girls? In my experience, boys take quite a bit longer. He'll get there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautifull bag you have made!!
ReplyDeleteMy boy is 2 and 3 months.. he can do evrything on the toilet, but everytime we are doing it about 7 days, he dont want to go the toilet anymore, so I wait a minth try again and after 7 dags I can stop again...
So no advice here... at on moment al children can do it!!
I love you PJ's!!!!
On potty training, 1) He's a boy. It's just gonna take longer and 2) is he, by any chance, strong willed? It'll happen (although, sometimes I would like it to happen sooner rather than later, I too am attempting to potty train my 2.5 year old boy!)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the nightgowns. Those are great, I think my daughter would love them!
First off, I love this bag!!! Just in time for Christmas too. Thanks! Second--potty training. The thing that has worked best for me was to set aside a good week or so to do nothing but train. And then section off a portion of your house so that you can see him wherever he goes. Then take off the pants (you could make him some of your awesome leg warmers so he doesn't freeze in your igloo ;0) ). Let him run naked for the entire week. It forced my little one to notice and pay attention when she would pee and then be standing in a puddle; she couldn't ignore it this way. After a week or so, when things start moving along, add clothes. I've also heard people have a lot of success having the child teach a doll or stuffed animal to use the potty.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have heard, most boys are at least 3 years old before they are potty trained. Mine just turned three and he is finally telling us when he needs to go, rather than us taking him every 30 min. or so. I actually took a class on "toilet learning" (I am a daycare provider) and the main point they made was that when the child is ready, the process will be simple, quick and easy. And also that bribes/treats, etc. won't work. I still tried that though. Didn't work. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteLove the PJ's! Did you use a pattern? Love the raglan look.
ReplyDeleteCan't help you in the potty dept. I have 2 girls, only one of which is trained. Sounds like you already have that area covered.
I do have a friend with boys, and her youngest trained in only a week. I think he was just really ready, and had been watching his older brother for a long time. I think it totally depends on the child and it is hard for us as parents to not get frustrated when it doesn't happen.
You are killing me with all this dolly stuff. I did get 2 doll beds with bedding made (thanks for posting all your measurements!)but I will have to put dolly clothes on the back burner until after Christmas. I have SO much to do before then!! Keep it coming, it inspires me to do it all for my girls! Thanks SO much!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful stuff! Love it, your daughter is going to be telling all her friends that her mom makes the best doll stuff ever!
ReplyDeleteI've never potty trained anyone, so I really can't help you there, but one thing that I learned recently might be an encouragement. I was like 4 before I was potty trained because I had an "Immature bladder lining" apparently it can happen, and kids just outgrow it but it can make potty training really hard/impossible. My guess is your little guy doesn't have this, but there may be other reasons that he's not quite ready, but he'll outgrow them! Hang in there, soon he'll get it and you'll be diaper free (I can understand your wish to get out of diapering, I'm only 8 months in on kid #1 and the laundry gets tedious!)
My daughter learned to flush the toilet somewhere around her second birthday. I set her on there, she peed, I gave her treats, flushed the toilet, and, oh boy, magic! She hopped on the seat, said, "Good job, Deysi," hopped off, flushed the toilet, hopped back on, etc, etc, etc... Kept her entertained for about 1/2 hr to an hour. She was more or less potty trained after that. So what I'm trying to say is, if he hasn't learned to flush the toilet yet, teach him! Maybe that'll help?
ReplyDeleteI have heard it is messy and mostly heard of people doing this in warmer summer weather but just take his diaper off and he wont like the feeling of peeing himself. just a thought...
ReplyDeleteThe backpack is soooo cute... I want to make one!!!
Christine,
ReplyDeleteI'm loving all of the dolly clothes, etc. that you have made. I need to complete my girls' dolls and haven't even started on clothes yet. Stress much?! They are getting their tonsils out in Jan. so I figure if the dolls aren't done on time I could always give them then. My boys turn two next week and my husband and I are TOTALLY dreading the year of potty training ahead of us!!!!
Your doll carrier turned out super cute! I love the choice of fabric! I just finished cutting my pieces tonight and hope to put it together this week. Still nervous about that since I'm a very beginner sewer and have no idea what I'm doing.
ReplyDeleteCan't help you about the potty-training. I have two girls and so far the first was easy (I'm sure if I ever have a boy it won't be as easy) I was also a preschool teacher and it seems like all the boys are ready around 3 years instead of 2 (like a lot of girls) and I promise you a year from now you won't be changing any diapers :)
LOVE the fabric you used for your doll carrier. SO fabulous.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Burke is solidly two and a half and we haven't even started potty training yet. Our pediatrician reassures me that boys potty train at 3 years old on average. I don't know if that's encouraging, or discouraging (sorry!)... :)
Super cute doll carrier! I'm giggling at your potty training story. My 2 girls potty trained with ease right around two. My 2 1/2 yo son completely flips out when I bring up the potty and wants nothing to do with it. He's a layed back kid, so it just shocks me when he throws a fit...so I've put it on the back burner for awhile.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and check frequently. Re: your 3yo and potty training. Just keep being patient mama. Boys are usually more difficult so don't despair. My baby boy is now 21 yo and we survived it. I miss those days and my memories don't really include the diaper count or the "embarassing moments" although if I think really hard I can remember ;-) You are a wonderful mama and you will persevere.
