Let's all ignore the horrible lighting and the wrinkles. It gets dark in the afternoon here people! :)
The dreaded zipper fly. I always thought they seemed too hard. Sure I can insert a zipper in a dress, do a buttonhole, but a zipper fly? Other people could do them, but not me. But, I started thinking about it. Why not me? I'm reasonably intelligent. So I gave it a go. And, it worked on the first try and was actually fairly simple!
If you've ever wanted to attempt a zip fly too, this is a great video tutorial, that helped me bunches.
My sewing resolution this year was to try some things I've never tried before, and thought were too difficult. I'm glad I did, because now I won't ever look at a pattern of zip fly pants again, wish I could make them, but decide they were beyond me and go on to another pattern.
And because I'm pretty proud of myself I will subject you to a zipper shot. My button is a little out of place, but I had to make the pants a smidge tighter on my skinny minny even though they do have buttonhole elastic
If anyone is interested, these are the Tulip Pants from the fall 2009 issue of Ottobre (they're #12). I've wanted to make them since I received this issue. They have sweet little gathered front pockets.
Angled back flap pockets with cute little pintucks. This is the first project I've done in awhile that I've sewn purely and completely for fun. And, even though I'm generally an instant gratification sewer, these were fun.
Like almost all of the Ottobre patterns I've sewn, the fit is awesome on my little girl. If you have a thin kiddo, I'd go down a size though. My daughter could have easily fit into the next size down with some added length. We have the buttonhole elastic pretty tight.
Now, for the question.
As much as I loved making these pants and love the design of them, when they were all said and done I'm not sure I'm sold on them.
Is this cord a bit too wild for them? Cute with a little red babydoll top, or don't bother?
I can't decide if they're cool, or really not cool in this print.
I do plan to make another pair in a really thin lightwash denim. I think those will be really cute and vintagey. Especially with cute back buttons.
Do you have any sewing resolutions this year?

I LOVE THEM!!!! The cord is perfect--where'd you get it, by the way? Absolutely adorable--I wouldn't change a thing!
ReplyDeletewow great job on the zipper! :)gina

They are beautiful! I like the cord but wonder if some of the great details aren't lost in the print. I don't think it is too wild though.
ReplyDeleteGood job pusing yourself on the boundries of your sewing ablilities!
I was iffy on the cord until I saw them on your kiddo. TOO CUTE! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI think these are adorable. I've been doing lots of zipper flys since my Big Little Man was born 2 1/2 years ago. Once you do them, they aren't so bad. I love the fabric on your little one.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Karen G.!!! They are FABULOUS! I'd also love to know where you got that corduroy! I'd be allll over it.
ReplyDeleteAwesome job!
Those are super cute! Great job! I am very impressed with the zipper. I bought one Ottobre magazine and my head was spinning when I looked at the pattern page! :)
ReplyDeleteI tried something new with sewing last night. When I do appliqué I always use a straight stitch because I'm afraid of the satin stitch but last night I did it! Yeah!
Those pants are really cute. I have a skinny mini too. I wonder what those pants would look like in 2 or 3 different coordinating fabrics? I might have a go at those for spring once I catch up on doll carriers!
ReplyDeleteI love those pants! You sound exactly like me...I know how to put all kinds of zippers in, but have always said the fly zipper would be way too complicatied! Since you have done it you are giving me hope! I think I will actually try it!
ReplyDeletePS- I personally love the fabric!
I think they look really cute.
ReplyDeleteYou rock!! I love them. I do agree that the details (which are so cute) are a little lost in the fabric. A lightweight denim would be adorable!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I love the pants, love the fabric and MUST have this pattern. You did a fabulous job, they look gorgeous on your daughter. What is the fabric?
ReplyDeleteThe fabric is Baby Nay Mint Julep. :)
ReplyDeleteThey are totally cool and you did a fantastic job on that zipper! I've been sewing over 30 years and rarely make an attempt at one.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the details are so lost. The important thing is that it is comfortable for your daughter to wear--you already have the cute part down!
When I first saw the detail pics, I thought to myself they'd show up better in a plainer fabric, so the print might be a little much for me...then again, I only have boys (=
ReplyDeleteI think they are so adorable. I love the fabric. I may buy the issue just to make these for my little girl. The cord material is great!
ReplyDeleteOh I am so glad you posted this because I am too afraid to try any zipper fly from Ottobre because of the limited sewing instructions. I usually like to tackle the unknown with lots of pictures and wordy sewing descriptions. Now I'll have to give it a try, especially with the link you gave. Awesome print by the way.
ReplyDeleteI love everything about these pants. Wonderful pattern, choice of fabric and project execution.
ReplyDeleteJust a quick note to let you know that a link to this post will be placed on CraftCrave today [19 Jan 01:00am GMT]. Thanks, Maria
ReplyDeleteLove, love the print and the details together. Congratulations on your new learning achievement. This year I'm hoping to add some new skills and techniques to my repertoire as well.
ReplyDeleteThese with a periwinkle blue skinny turtleneck would be so 60s. (I remember and I was there!)
Those are very professional looking and thanks for the tip on where to find the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThey are the cutest pants I have EVER seen!!! You did a terrific job on them. I have that issue of Ottobre and I'm going to give them a try too (I'm reasonable intelligent.... :) ). I love the fabric, love the pintucks, love the gathers in the cute pockets, love your topstitching (I just can't sew straight), love the long ruffle. Love it all. Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these pants! Love the fabric, too. Just perfect!!!!
ReplyDeleteThose pants really came out well, Christine!!
ReplyDeleteThat's an amazing corduroy. I think I would like the pants better with the main part in a solid color and just the ruffle in the print.
ReplyDeleteMy middle daughter is a skinny minny too, but even with your encouraging words, I'm too scared of zippers to try this (cute as it is).
