I don't. If something frustrates me I either persevere and finish it, or I toss it. Often I have more than one thing on the go at a time, but they stay out where I can see them until they're done.
Yesterday I did a bit of a deep clean in my sewing room and was surprised to find a few random unfinished projects.
I found this Bit of Whimsy Doll. I had started making her for a friend and I'm not sure why I became sidetracked and forgot about her. I was on a bit of a doll making kick awhile back as my 5yr old loves them. There isn't anything wrong with this doll, other than I can't find her other leg. I don't have anymore of that knit either, even in my scrap bin. Would it be weird to have mismatched legs?
I made this dress last summer and remember taking photos to share a tutorial with all of you. I didn't share it though, and can't find the photos. Maybe I will make another?
I finished it aside from the hem and buttons (I was going to add buttons down the middle). My husband said he didn't like it, so maybe that is why I never got around to hemming it. I think this will be too short for my daughter by summer. Maybe I will hem it and gift it, or donate it.
I know this project is close to a year old as well. This was going to be for my 5 yr old (then 4 yr old). It is hard to see on the photo, but when attaching the hood I pinched the fabric in one spot and there is a tiny pinch in the fabric along the neckline above one arm. It bugged me enough that I wanted to take the hood off and put it back on, but I was lazy in that moment so tucked it away. And, apparently forgot about it. I still need to hem this (it is dress length) and hem the sleeves too.
Do you think it is weird to have a nightie with a hood? I'm not sold on this as a dress anymore. Maybe I will take off the hood and just put on a regular neck binding.
And these leggings.....I have no recollection of ever starting these! The waistband still needs to be done as well as the legs hemmed. I have no idea why I made these as my daughter has a pair just like them. Maybe I started this and forgot I started them and made another pair? How does that happen?
So, what about you? Have any sewing projects you need to finish?

I have a dress half sewn in a grocery bag at the bottom of a tub in the top of my closet...i think.
ReplyDeleteI'm like you. I don't like to have unfinished projects. I usually sew something until it is completed. I do have a pile of things cut out to sew though:o) And I don't care what your husband says that mermaid and polkadot dress is adorable!!!! What is that mermaid fabric?
ReplyDeleteI love reading this post because I am the same way. But then finding those projects really is a bit irritating and at the same time, motivating.
ReplyDeleteI have an overcoat for my husband waiting to be finished. I started it 8 years ago. And no, I've not been working on it all that time. But the cashmere wool was expensive and there is so little to finish...and yet I'm at a point on the lapels where it bugs me where they aren't perfect. They must be perfect! So it is still waiting to be finished. Sigh.....we aren't all that young anymore either!
I don't like unfinished projects either. I do LOVE that dress though! You really should do a tutorial for it - that or I'm going to have to figure out how to make it on my own
ReplyDeleteI dislike them but I have to admit I think half my craft/sewing room is unfinished projects. My mind goes quicker than my hands it seems! Honestly though, and I say this from one 'detail' person to another, I think you would be CRAZY to unpick a hood for a tiny pinch in the fabric that no-one will ever notice. Give yourself a break I say. I love that dress too! Send it to me and my daughter would happily wear that as a top over some long shorts or leggings. ha ha :-)
ReplyDeletemy mom just gave me an unfinished pair of jeans from when I was fifteen, I cut them and that was it. I'm considering finishing them, just to torture myself. Maybe if I use barely any seam allowance I can shove myself into them and convince myself that I'm the size I was then...
ReplyDeleteI have a few unfished projects that just keep bugging me and I should just get to them. When we did the DMK coat sew-a-long, I only made one and my girls had to take turns. I should really do the other one. I also never finished the O & S Ice Cream dresses and now I don't know if the one I started will even still fit my girls. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteI love that mermaid dress! I would be very excited for the tutorial if you ever get to it.
Oh I am terrible about this. I am like an ADHD sewist. I probably have a half dozen things partly finished and/or cut out. I get bored with some things (or lazy) and just put them in a large bag and by the time I dig them out, it's too small or I don't have the materials needed to finish it. :) I love the dress your husband didn't like. If you posted a tutorial, I'd love it! My 4 yr old is really into comfy dresses right now and that looks like a quick and comfy design. I love your blog and check it every day. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteOO, you'll have to finish that doll, she's adorable and needs her legs ( :
ReplyDeleteI have a few. I keep them all in a little plastic drawer. If it gets too full, I start 'finishing' some of those old things. I know of a couple that have been in there for a year. They keep getting shoved to the bottom. Those bug me. Maybe I'll count them and force myself to empty the drawer before I start something new next week.
ReplyDeleteI have scads of unfinished projects...lots of enthusiasm to begin, but then I get distracted by a shiny new project that I just can't wait to start. And so on.
ReplyDeleteI am the kind of person that has lots of projects going on at the same time, and a lot of unfinished projects - some are more than ten years old, some are from last week - I do finish most of them though. Cute doll - and different legs would make her a Pippi Longstocking kind of doll - no problem. Tone
ReplyDeleteI'm sooo bad at finishing projects. I can start out strongly, and have a great time on a project, but as soon as I hit a wall, I put it aside and often leave it. I find it very difficult to pick up a project again.
ReplyDeleteToo much ADHD? Or some alphabetical combination.
I do it with crochet projects as well. I have a lovely little hoodie vest for a toddler girl sitting here, waiting to be seamed together....took 3 days to crochet the bits, now it's be 6 weeks of languishing!
I need your discipline, please send me some.
I sew nighties with hoods on them for my wee girls. They love love them with hoods. If they have wet hair after a shower, hoods go up, if they are cold in bed, hoods go up. They look like little druids but it is so cute! I totally vote for keeping the hood.
I don't intentionally not finish projects, but I probably have 6 or 7 sitting around. One is a diaper bag for my sister, I got it almost done and decided it was too big. So I took it apart, but then I had to finish a dress for a friend and never got back to the bag.
ReplyDeleteThe mermaid dress would make a cute summer top with shorts! The doll is adorable! I think the hooded nightie is cute. I love the fabrics together. I need to see what unfinished projects I have in my sewing room. I'm afraid to look.
ReplyDeleteI love the mermaid dress too! I have that fabric with some orange polka dot waiting for the perfect pattern, that would be so cute on my 4 year old! By the way, the fabric has been waiting for over a year, so no, you are not the only one with unfinished projects! :)
ReplyDeleteI have just the two fabrics to make a dress like your mermaid print. Is there a pattern for this one? Glad I'm not the only one with a few to-be-completed projects around! Today I'm going to sew up a little apron I cut out for my granddaughter. Got to get it done while it will still fit her.
ReplyDeleteI love the mermaid dress and all of your tutorials!! Would love to see one for that dress!
ReplyDeleteAm currently make two giant dice for my colleague's soon to be born twins. Plus I'm trying to finish a jacket that just doesnt want to be finished ;) That doll looks really cute though, am sure two mismatched legs wont matter :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I always put off my personal projects to start and finish things for others (baby gifts, bday presents). I need to finish them and seeing your pics is reminding me to go through my stack. =)
ReplyDeleteI have unfiished projects everywhere! Short attention span so my husband says!! I ADORE the mermaid dress. Really hope you find the pics because its gorgeous and I would totally love a tutorial
ReplyDeleteThis afternoon I was determined to complete the hems and a few dresses, attach a button or two so I can proudly say that I have no unfinished items......well at this moment, ask me again next Friday :) Do love the whimsy doll, now Im sure I have a pattern for her somewhere....
ReplyDeletePajamas with a hood - sure! My son keeps asking me for some jammies with a hood, or at least a cap he can sleep in. I can already see the bed head!
ReplyDeleteAnd please don't give up on that mermaid dress! Heck, I have a couple girls that would LOVE that! Maybe I should buy it from you - I don't even mind putting on the buttons myself!!
I'm still so new to sewing that any project I start becomes an obsession and I MUST finish it. I also struggle with the fear that if I cut into some fabric that I particularly love, and mess up whatever I'm making, then I'll be upset, so I have to feel pretty confident to attempt something. The mermaid dress is cute! I'd love to see a tutorial :)
